2. WHAT IS SO COOL ABOUT THE SCALABILITY OF ZILLIQA?
Zilliqa processes more transactions per second as more mining nodes join the network. This may sound like a natural thing at first, but it turns out to be technically challenging to accomplish, and certainly hasn’t been possible by past blockchain protocols. Getting consensus in a larger crowd is technically harder! Zilliqa’s novel consensus protocol solves this problem. With Zilliqa’s scalability, we can support dApps that demand transaction rates beyond today’s blockchains.

5. What features does Zilliqa offer to dApps and miners?
Besides providing a blockchain platform for dApps that scales to thousands of transactions per second in throughput, Zilliqa offers several other features to dApps and miners, including

7. IS ZILLIQA BASED ON PROOF-OF-WORK (POW)?
Zilliqa only leverages PoW to establish mining identities. This process defends against sybil attacks and is also used to perform network sharding. Unlike other blockchains though, Zilliqa does not use PoW for consensus. PoW is performed only at larger intervals, not by every miner on every block. Thus, it has a much smaller energy footprint. We’ve stayed with PoW since it has been well studied in the literature and field-tested, while its emerging alternatives (such as PoS) are still under active research.
8. WHAT IS YOUR CONSENSUS PROTOCOL THEN?
The protocol has novel advances over what has been published by Zilliqa team members in scientific conference papers. It comprises of the overarching layer of directory committee, and a refinement of the PBFT protocol in each shard. Zilliqa employs Elliptic Curve Based Schnorr Signature Algorithm (EC-Schnorr) with multi-signing or signature aggregation. This means that the size of the signature stays small even when a lot of miners sign a block. Moreover, by leveraging efficient network topology, Zilliqa's consensus scheme reduces the communication complexity to O(N), i.e., linear to the size of the network.
9. WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY SHARDING?
Sharding is a concept that has existed in distributed databases for a long time, but hasn’t been demonstrated for open, permissionless blockchains (where anyone can join and participate) at scale. The idea is to automatically split up a large network of machines processing transactions into parallel sub-committees or “shards”. Each shard processes its own microblock in parallel with other shards, and resulting micro-blocks are merged into a final one. This automatic network parallelization has now been made practical for open blockchains through Zilliqa!
10. HOW DOES ZILLIQA COMPARE WITH OTHER Scalability PROPOSALS FOR BLOCKCHAINS?
Well, there are many different proposals. Some suggest moving transactions off-chain, some re- parameterizing the block sizes, and so on. Zilliqa’s proposal is orthogonal, and directly targets the scalability of the underlying blockchain itself. While moving transactions off-chain or re-engineering data structures is useful, the core blockchain consensus protocol itself has to support high on-chain transaction rates! Several blockchains are considering PoS for consensus; however, there is a tradeoff in transaction finality in such solutions. Zilliqa offers transaction finality by its use of PBFT-style consensus. By using PoW for identity establishment only, an efficient aggregate signature scheme, and sharding, Zilliqa offers a new design for a scalable blockchain.
